Chessam to host Chinese female grandmaster
Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) will next week host a high-profile Chinese Woman Grandmaster, Zhu Chen.
The female chess celebrity is expected to land at Chileka International Airport on November 17,2015.
Chen, who is revered as the 2001 Women World Chess champion, told Chessam officials that the main agenda of her visit is to inspire ladies to work hard at chess and school.
According to Chessam publicist, Makhosi Nyirenda, the grandmaster, will talk to chess playing students from various schools at Saint Andrews International High School on November 17 before holding an exhibition with the country’s top players the following day.
Nyirenda said Chen is a right person for students to learn from as she has excelled at chess and “She is a very formidable woman grandmaster and holds a masters degree from Tsinghua University. She doesn’t look at chess in isolation, and that is the spirit all of us should have. She is a role model,” Nyirenda said.
“It will be interesting, and inspiring for female players, to see our top players lining up against a lady grandmaster in a simultaneous exhibition,” Nyirenda said.
She is also the first Chinese player to win an international competition in 1988 when she clinched the World’s Girls under-12 in Romania, being China’s 13th Chess grandmaster and winning several championships at world level.
Chen, who is married to a Quatari grandmaster Muhamadi Al Mudiaski, is ranked with well-known chess players like the Hungarian Polgar sisters Judith, Susan and Sofia, Maya Chiburdanize, Chinese HouYifan and Xie Jun who have defied all odds by competing on equal terms with men.
