Chibavi Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) will represent Mzuzu in the Northern Education Division Airtel Rising Stars’ girls and boys football after seeing off Masasa CDSS and Katoto Secondary at district level on Saturday at Katoto ground.
Chibavi girls’ team beat Masasa 6-5 through post-match penalties while in boys category they defeated Katoto 4-2 after 15-minute of regulation time yielded them no result.
Naomi Mwale, Chipokiwe Ngwira, Memory Banda, Brenda Shaba, Flocy Ngoma and Pricilla Soko converted the spot-kicks for Chibavi CDSS while Maurine Phiri, Chikondi Duwe, Lucy Chiumia, Shupe Nkhoma, Chikondi Gondwe netted for Masasa.
Vitumbiko Mkandawire brought shame on Masasa when she kicked her decisive spot over the bar, forcing her teammates to weep in front of hundreds of soccer fans that watched the game.
It took time for the defeated to stop crying after fans that thronged the play ground laughed at them.
“The committee was guilty of giving us only 15 minutes of play, so we failed to get goals, hence the penalties that we missed,” said Duwe.
Masasa beat Zolozolo 5-0 before finals.
But for Chibavi, who in the semi-finals beat Luwinga CDSS 3-0, it was all celebrations for winning the Mzuzu title.
Facilitator of the tournament, Ogrieve Kazuwa, said he was impressed with the discipline of the teams in the tournament.
