Chicco Kalirani to be laid to rest today

NO MORE—Chicco

Musician Chicco Kalirani famed for hits such as ‘Galu Amulume’ and ‘Achithekere’ will be laid to rest today in Chiswe Village, Traditional Authority Kapeni, Blantyre.

His brother Thom said Monday the family was saddened by Chicco’s death.

“He was a brother and a friend who was very humble and was a hard worker,” he said.

Thom said Chicco, who used to star with Billy Kaunda in the past years, died of high blood pressure at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre on Sunday.

Kaunda, who recently launched his book Hills and Valleys, also said he was shocked Kalirani’s death.

“I am heartbroken and shocked with Chicco’s death. He was a brother in marriage and we launched our careers in music together. We also recorded together,” Kaunda said.

He said they met through music as they were leading choirs.

“We used to meet during choir festivals; he was leading a choir and I was also leading a choir and that marked the beginning of our friendship and went on to become brothers in marriage,” the legislator said.

Several other players in the creative industry have expressed shock at Chicco’s death.

According to Thom, Chicco, who disappeared from the music limelight, is survived by a wife and three children.
