Chicken Inn’s George Majika eyes Flames call-up

After helping Zimbabwean side Chicken Inn lift last weekend’s Energem International Bonanza championship, George Majika has expressed readiness to play for Malawi national football team.

Majika, who was born in Zimbabwe but has Malawian roots, is a left-sided player who is comfortable on both legs.

The 26-year-old winger was a marvel to watch during Chicken Inn’s opening match against Wanderers, giving problems to Felix Zulu.

Majika only identifies his Malawian home village as Mserebo but speaks fluent Chichewa.

He said playing for the Flames would be a dream-come-true as he considers Malawi his home.

“I am ready to try my luck with Malawi if an opportunity arises. I would really love to come back home and play for my motherland someday. After playing for Chicken Inn for about five seasons, I think I have attained enough experience to help my country Malawi,” Majika said.

Flames Coach Meck Mwase said he would contact the player on the matter.

“I have heard about the player and I will get his contacts. I also need to watch videos of some of the games he has played and see whether we can try him or not. I have to assess him thoroughly before making a commitment,” Mwase said.

During the Wanderers’ game, Majika, who dons jersey number 7, provided pace and won several aerial balls for Chicken Inn.

He was quick on the ball and displayed efficiency in his most of his deliveries into the box.

Malawi has in the past lost opportunities to rope in players of Malawi origin plying their trade in Zimbabwe.

One of such players, Benjamin Mwaruwari, went on to play for Zimbabwe and Portsmouth in England.

Another star, Khama Biliat, who hails from Dedza, is one of the best players in South Africa and one of Zimbabwe’s most influential stars.

Biliat plays for Kaizer Chiefs in the Rainbow Nation.
