Celebrated poet Chigo Gondwe Chokani over the weekend put the country in the limelight when she dished out her verses during the 80th birthday celebration of former South African president Thabo Mbeki.
Dressed in her beautiful African attire, cool and composed, the versatile Chigo left no stone unturned during her performance as she entertained the guests, including the birthday boy Mbeki.
In her verses, Chigo did not skip Chichewa before moving on to English as the audience listened attentively.
She said yesterday she was excited to perform at Mbeki’s 80th birthday celebration but could not be drawn to say much.
Her sister Zilanie congratulated her for her performance as well as for shining for Malawi.
“Our sister Chigo Gondwe performing her poetry and music at Thabo Mbeki’s 80th birthday party in South Africa last night (Saturday). From Bubu Lazy to Poet Laureate to CEO of Winco Malawi Women’s Bank,” Zilanie said.
She said Chigo was invited to the birthday celebration.
The poet, who is wife to Wailing Brother lead guitarist and former Black Missionaries’ lead guitarist Takudziwani, has since won the hearts of many people in the country for her star performance at Mbeki’s birthday celebration.
“Now this is what I call big leagues. Malawi’s Chigo Gondwe performed at Thabo Mbeki’s 80th birthday dinner gala,” wrote Kondwani Zulu on his Facebook page.
Chigo has represented the country at many poetry fronts both local and international, including starring at Poetry Africa.
