BY MABVUTO KAMBUWE:

Zobran Elias is set to become the first player from Lilongwe’s Chigoli Academy to earn a $62,000 [K44 million] per-year scholarship to study at Indian Mountain School in Lakeville, Connecticut, the United States (US), this summer.

Zobran, 14, will travel to America after being chosen for the student-athlete pathway programme for academically-inclined players at the academy.

Chigoli founder, George Maguire, described the scholarship as a life-time opportunity for the youngster, whose dream is to become a collegiate athlete and neurosurgeon.

“Zobran personifies the type of player, student and person we, at Chigoli Academy are working hard to develop for Malawi. [He is] hardworking, diligent, talented and of a good character,” Maguire said.

He added that Zobran’s character, focus on education and sports impressed several schools in the US but he ultimately chose Indian Mountain and he will join them next month.

Chris Kaimmer, who leads the academy’s initiatives in the US, said: “Chigoli’s players in Malawi possess immense potential. Educational scholarships to America can help unlock it and set our student-athletes onto transformative educational journeys.”

Chigoli wants to be offering such scholarships to between three and five children every year.

Chigoli has contributed three players to the Malawi under-17 national football team that is in Mauritius ahead of the kickoff of the Cosafa Championship today.
