Malawian boxing pair Chikondi Makawa and Anisha Basheer yet again suffered defeats in Lusaka, Zambia on Saturday.

Former national welterweight champion, Makawa, lost on points to Shariff ‘Boom boom’ Kasongo of DR Congo whereas Basheer also lost to Zambian Lorita Mzeya in a non-title rematch.

Except for few, a lot of Malawian boxers have been misfiring during international fights.

Despite camping in Zimbabwe at Delta Force Boxing Academy, the pair struggled in Lusaka and their only solace came after completing their eight rounds.

No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions Managing Director, Craig Rousseau, said despite the defeats, they learnt a lot from the neighbouring country.

Rousseau promised to continue supporting boxing and asked the corporate world to join the initiative.

“We will not stop here. In fact, we are still building ourselves up and although we have lost please don’t be annoyed. Our boxers did extremely well against very well seasoned boxers who have exceptional records. Just imagine Lorita now has 11 fights without a defeat.

The promoter also backed Makawa’s performance, saying the boxer was asked to drop from middleweight category.

“I think this also contributed to his downfall because he did not have much time to train at a lower weight,” he said.

Makawa and Basheer featured on the World Boxing Council Gold medal undercard which saw Zambian Catherine Phiri defending her WBC Gold in the first round against Gabisile Tshabalala of Botswana.

Some local promoters including unlicensed matchmaker Steve Mawenzi Msiska and Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) President Lonzoe Zimba also watched the bill in Zambia.
