Gunbayar Myagmarsuren from Mongolia, Zhuban and Locci Damiano of Italy finished on third, fourth and fifth places respectively with 6.5 points each.

The African Amateurs Chess gold medallist, Chipanga, said he was delighted with his performance despite failing to grab a medal.

“I could have done better, but this is still a fair result. Competing at such a big event has taught me many lessons which are vital in my journey,” he said.

Chess Association of Malawi Publicity Secretary, Makhosi Nyirenda, said they were impressed with Chipanga’s performance in Italy.

Chipanga, who is earmarked to represent Malawi at the Batumi Chess Olympiad in Georgia in September, returns home Wednesday through Chileka International Airport.
