Chiletso Chipanga wins Muleso- Mphande open chess

Candidate Master Chiletso Chipanga underscored his stake as one of the best players on the domestic scene after he won the Muleso-Mphande Open chess tournament that ended on Independence Day, Monday July 6, at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe

With no Petros ‘Razorblade’ Mfune around to refute his gambling tactics, Chipanga was untouchable, beating formidable players like George Mwale, Khama Chindole and Stanford Chiwambo in the process.

However, Chipanga did not get it on a silver platter as he had to survive the Buchholz-tie-breaker to overcome his runner-up Fide Master Gelard Mphungu.

The two chess snipers leveled on 8.5 points apiece.

But contrary to people’s expectations, when the two chess aces met in what was supposed to be the game of death, they both avoided a full scale war to settle for a non-violent draw.

Evergreen George ‘Nakamura’ Mwale ended on position three with 6.5 points while Liwonde based Richard Chiona was fourth with six points.

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) president, Kezzie Msukwa, applauded the players for putting up a grand fight in the tournament and thanked Muleso and Mphande for sponsoring the grand event.

Co-sponsor Mayeso Mphande said he was convinced with how Central Region Chess League handled the event and was motivated to pump more into chess.
