Chimasula misses Miss University Africa crown
University of Malawi – Chancellor College—student, Epylen Chimasula, missed the Miss University Africa 2017 crown which went to Marir Lorriane Nadal from Mauritius on Saturday.
The fifth edition of Miss University Africa was held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Contestants from 54 African countries competed for the crown.
Nadal succeeded Lesotho, as the reigning Miss University Africa Queen.
She was crowned by Eberechi Wike.
According to available information, the performances of Miss University Africa 2017 contestants were evaluated by a panel of judges while broadcaster and journalist Soni Irabor was the lead judge.
But despite missing the crown, which saw Nadal walk away with, among other prizes, $10,000 and a car, Chimasula got a medal as the most behaved queen in the camp.
“It’s sad I didn’t come out top but I tried my best and I am also happy that I got a medal as the most well behaved queen in the camp,” Chimasula said.
She said Nadal won because of her performance on stage.
“There are a lot of lessons I have learnt and now I want to be the ambassador of the organisation in Malawi,” Chimasula said.
She was expected to leave Nigeria yesterday.
According to media reports, Miss University Africa (Somalia) was the first runner up while Miss University Africa (Nigeria) emerged second runner-up.
The reports also indicate that Chimasula did not make it into the top 11.
Apart from the winner and the first runner up and second runner up, others who made it to the top 11 include Miss University Africa (Eriteria), Miss University Africa ( Tunisia), Miss University Africa (Gambia) and Miss University Africa (Ethiopia).
Chimasula left the country in November.
She said the core values of the Miss University Africa are to celebrate African culture and African women.
“It is a very good platform because it aims at promoting girl child education but also promoting culture among African youths,” she said.
The 21-year-old student, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, said it was the first time for her to participate in the contest.
