Experienced golfer Chimdima Mhango underlined his class when he utilised home-ground advantage to become the first player to win the Nico Life Insurance Senior Golfers’ ballpool on Friday.
Mhango, who is Country Club Limbe (CCL) Manager, showcased his familiarity with the golf course to emerge the champion.
He earned a two-under-par finish to see off a field of 43 golfers.
Prema Singh also scored 21 points, but he was counted out to second place while James Chikapa posted 20 points to finish third.
In individual awards, Nyakhoko Nsona hit nearest to-the-pin on hole 13 while James Chimwaza won the longest drive on the 18th.
In another rare category, Vizenge Kumwenda emerged the winner in the 20-golfer Falcons and Juniors’ category with 19 points.
In his speech, Mhango said he utilised home-ground advantage to frustrate his opponents.
“There was no way any other senior golfer could beat me at my own backyard. I know my course very well. That, plus the fact that I am a very good golfer, makes me a formidable player on the CCL greens,” he said.
Nico Life Insurance Company’s chief executive officer, Osman Karim, said they organised the event to give seniors an opportunity for competition and prove to the world that there is good life after retirement.
“Some golfers that played today are aged 85 and, as a life insurance company, this kind of interaction helps us to understand what life after retirement is all about,” he said.
Karim hinted that Nico Life was planning to sponsor another seniors’ golf tournament.
Senior Golfers Association President, Gilbert Chirwa, said the gathering was the right forum for the seniors to impart knowledge of the game to youthful golfers that took part in the Falcons and juniors’ section.
“It was a good forum for us to engage and share ideas and tricks,” he said.
