The former Speaker, Henry Chimuthu Banda currently Democrat Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament (MP) has endorsed the Tonse Alliance ahead of the fresh presidential election.
In an interview on Thursday, Banda said he and his constituents are impressed with what the Tonse Alliance—led by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera and State Vice President Saulos Chilima, as running mate—stands for.
Banda also said it is within his and his constituents’ right to chose who to support.
“I had a meeting in my constituents where we agreed to endorse Tonse Alliance. I gave them a report on what has been happening politically, I told them that I refused ministerial post. I have informed them that I was completely out of equation within the DPP party,” said Banda.
Banda rejected a ministerial appointment early this year arguing that he was not consulted when the decision to appoint was being made. In 2019, Banda won a parliament seat in Nkhotakota North Constituency under the DPP ticket.
Banda was the Speaker of the National Assembly from May 2009 to May 2014.
