By Williams Gondwa:

Malawi under-23 national football team Captain, Chimwemwe Idana, has received a pair of football boots following his outstanding displays and leadership qualities during the junior Flames’ practice matches in Belgium.

Football talent recruitment agency Rainbow Sports presented the award to Idana on Wednesday after his lone goal gave Malawi a 1-0 victory over Roda FC of Holland.

One of the agency’s officials, James Woods-Nkhutabasa, said they rewarded the Nyasa Big Bullets semi-senior player for his outstanding performances in the four games that Malawi have played in the European country.

Woods-Nkhutabasa said Idana had been instrumental in helping Malawi put into practice the vital lessons learnt during the tour.

“I have been impressed by the performance of the whole team but I have special praise for Idana, for the way he is leading by example in rallying his troops as captain. It is pleasing that the team is gelling very well. This is a good sign,” he said.

Idana expressed delight with the recognition and appreciation, saying he did not expect to receive the accolade.

“This is a welcome surprise. I did not expect to be singled out for such recognition out of the whole squad. This will motivate me to continue leading by example in fighting tooth and nail for the national team’s cause.

“I thank the coaches and Football Association of Malawi for making this trip possible. This is a great opportunity for us to learn and help the team compete at higher levels,” he said.

Woods-Nkhutabasa organised leading international football agents to travel to Belgium and watch the team play.

The move is likely to bear fruits as the agents have expressed interest in signing several Malawian players.

Idana has performed well in all of Malawi’s games so far and has also notched in two goals from his midfield position.

This means he is the junior Flames’ top goal-scorer during the training camp which was organised to help the team prepare for two back-to-back matches against Zambia in the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

Malawi are scheduled to return home on March 9 and will pass through Egypt for a friendly against the young Pharaohs on March 8.
