China rehabilitates Parliament Building

The government of the People’s Republic of China Wednesday handed over Parliament Building in Lilongwe, after maintenance works that cost it $1.5 million.

Among other things, the Asian country assisted Malawi by repairing a leaking roof and broken tiles.

The Parliament Building was opened in 2010 using a grant from the People’s Republic of China.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Long Zhou said China appreciates the cordial relationship it enjoys with Malawi.

Zhou said the Chinese government rehabilitated the building at the request of the Malawi Parliament.

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has hailed the People’s Republic of China for supporting the maintenance works.

Gotani Hara said, in the past two years, she has been reaching out to the Chinese Ambassador looking for continued assistance in maintenance of the building.

“You assured me of your support. Seeing the completion of the works is a proud moment for the Parliament of Malawi. I would, therefore, like to thank you for reaching out and assisting with the maintenance of the major areas that I felt were the most critical and required immediate attention.

“This is such a big milestone,” Hara said.
