A Chinese artist won the hearts of the audience at Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) in Thyolo on Tuesday when he performed Lawi’s popular hit ‘Amaona Kuchedwa’.
The member of the Sichuan Song and Dance Theatre, which is in the country until tomorrow, performed at the event which was part of the 2020 Happy Chinese New Year cultural performances.
The artist sang the song fluently and interacted with the audience.
His performance stunned several other officials, who attended the event, including Must Vice-Chancellor Professor Address Malata, who gave the artist money in appreciation.
“The students are busy with studies but they patronised the event just to see what our counterparts do as regards cultural performances. It was also a learning process for them since we have a school – Bingu School of Culture and Heritage which is offering degrees in among others, indigenous knowledge systems and practice,” Malata said.
Several other people as well as students, who patronised the event splashed some money to the artist as they sung along.
During the celebration of the Chinese New Year where different activities take centre stage, Chinese artists have taken up the challenge of performing some of Malawian artists’ songs.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Chancy Simwaka, said he enjoyed the outing with the performances adding that this symbolised the strong cultural exchange that is there between China and Malawi.
