The recent match between Malawi Under-23 National Football Team and Guangzhou R and F of China might open a window of opportunity for some Flames’ players.

Malawi Under-23 caretaker Coach, Gerald Phiri, on Wednesday confirmed that his counterpart, Dragan Stojkovic, informally expressed interest in some of the Flames’ players.

“The coach commended the talent of Chisomo Mpachika [defender], Binwell Katinji [striker] and Dalitso Sailesi [winger],” Phiri said.

“But it was just a talk between us. They did not engage the players. The relationship between the two sides continues, so if anything transpires, you will know. Otherwise, he was impressed with our performance and did not believe that we had assembled the team and trained within two weeks.”

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competitions’ Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, also said during a chat with Dragan, he appreciated Malawi’s talent.

“He talked at length about Sailesi and other few players. He added that they need to gain weight to be fit and strong if they are to make it into teams across the borders,” Zakazaka said.

The Chinese side have players from Brazil, Nigeria, Morocco, Israel, Korea and Australia.

The two teams met during the opening of Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, in a match that ended in a two-all draw last Saturday.

The Flames scored both goals through Katinji whereas Xiao Zhi and Zeng Chao netted for Guangzhou.
