Chipolopolo FC has emerged champions of the K5 million Mzuzu District Innobuild Football Association of Malawi (Fam) League with an unbeaten record.
In the last match of the campaign, the Mzimba North-based side defeated Mzuzu based-side, Masm 2-0 at Botanic Ground in Mzuzu City on Sunday to lift the title.
Chipolopolo won six games and drew once to finish with 19 points.
The team’s coach Komani Vinkhumbo said, despite being labeled as underdogs, they defied the odds to emerge champions.
“We were not given any chance to win this championship because we come from a rural area of Luzi. They said we could not compete with teams from urban areas. However, we were not demoralised and we produced our best performance to win the league with an unbeaten record,” said Vinkhumbo who also attributed the team’s win to Traditional Authority Jalavikuba’s his support for the team.
Masm Coach Noel Kamanga blamed their downfall to logistical challenges.
“We did not travel with the entire squad due to limited resources. Congratulations to our counterparts; it was their day,” Kamanga said.
Chipolopolo received K1.5 million and a trophy for being champions while runners-up Avengers FC, who finished with 15 points, pocketed K750,000. Third-placed side Emsizini will get K350,000.
Mzuzu District Football League General Secretary, Alphack Mkandawire applauded participating teams for maintaining discipline since the inception of the competition in August last year.
“We have run the league smoothly. The teams were fantastic and showcased great skills,” Mkandawire said.
