AFTER its successful launch at Blantyre Cultural Centre on June 26, the K5 million Superior Drama competition rolls into gear on July 21 in Chiradzulu.

The Superior Drama competition is a brainchild of Superior Events Management through Superior Films in partnership with National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam).

Superior Events Management Director Japhet Majekete said all was set for the competition and that the country should not doubt their capability.

“We are ready for the competition and the country should not doubt us. We have successfully run different events including boxing. What we need is the support,” Majekete said.

According to him, the competition starts in Chiradzulu on July 21 before moving to Balaka and Machinga the following day.

The competition will then move to Zomba on July 23, Mulanje on July 29, Blantyre July 30, Chikwawa August 5, Nsanje August 6 and Mwanza and Neno on August 13.

“The winners will qualify for the regional finals and its dates will be announced later. We just want to call upon the drama groups in these districts to prepare themselves and participate. This is open to all drama groups and it is our hope that drama groups will put up best performances but also give us quality productions,” Majekete said.

He said their aim was to help revamp theatre in the country which is currently on a death bed.

“As we said earlier we will be spending K5 million on prizes and other logistics for the competition. We have already spent close to K2.5 million sensitizing drama groups countrywide,” Majekete said.

Ntam president Eric Mabedi said during the launch that the competition will help motivate actors and actresses to do better but also push drama groups to be creative and come up with quality productions.

The competition will see the winner walk away with K1.5 million with second and third receiving K750,000 and K500,000 respectively.

The grand finals of the competition will be held in Lilongwe.
