Cholera death toll at 24

One more person has died of cholera in Lilongwe, raising the death toll to 24, a Ministry of Health (MoH) official said Tuesday

A Daily Cholera Update from MoH said at least five new cholera cases were recorded yesterday, bringing the total number of patients in cholera isolation camps to 20. These are in Salima, Dedza, Lilongwe, Karonga.

However, MoH spokesperson Joshua Malango said the cases of people infected with cholera are going down.

“It is only four districts which we still have to intensify the fight against cholera but, as it stands, cholera cases are going down. We are still administering cholera oral vaccines in Karonga and we will be finishing the campaign this week,” he said.

Thirteen people have died in Lilongwe, seven in Karonga, four in Salima while Dedza has only recorded one death.

This far, cholera has affected 13 districts with 764 cumulative cases.

The government is being supported by partners such as World Health Organisation in combating the outbreak.
