Chris Mzokomera, Doreen Lazaro shine in Junior golf

A day after spoiling junior golfers in Blantyre, Alliance Capital Limited hosted a juniors’ golf tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club last Saturday.

Chris Mzokomera was crowned the overall winner in the boys’ category with a gross score of 81 whereas Doreen Lazaro won the girls’ category.

In his acceptance speech, Mzokomera thanked the sponsor for the tournament and encouraged his fellow juniors to work hard.

Taking her turn, Lazaro said: “I am happy that I have won. Thank you sponsors. We appreciate your support. For those of you that have not won, do not be sad. Just work very hard.”

In the boys’ competition for those aged between 12 and 14, the winner was Frank Babu while Limbani Banda and Kamoza Longwe finished second and third, respectively.

The eight to 11 year-boys’ category saw Andileya Buleya, Temwa Longwe and Isaac Chaika scooping gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the same age bracket for girls, the championship went to Ireen Matius while Sam Waziya scooped the runner-up position. Mafunase Kuwali was third.

The tournament saw kids as young as four taking part.

There was, therefore, a category for the Under-Seven whose overall best player was Only Sagwirika.

Speaking during prize presentation ceremony, Alliance Capital Limited Business Development Executive, Elizabeth Likhunya, said she was overwhelmed by the turnout of the junior golfers.

“We are always pleased to associate ourselves with the kids. Investment, which is our business, is about kids. Therefore, we will continue to be involved with you,” Likhunya said.

“We are back here in March next for Lilongwe’s first inter-schools tournament. Our aim is to reach out to schools in Mzuzu then hopefully by the end of the year, we would realise our dream of a national event.”
