Chrisford Chayera will not contest in VAAM elections

Visual Arts Association of Malawi (VAAM) President Chrisford Chayera said on Tuesday that he will not contest during the elections which will take place during the extra-ordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at Grace Bandawe in Blantyre on Friday.

The association will be holding an extra-ordinary AGM following leadership crisis according to sources.

The AGM is also being held with the term for the current national executive yet to expire in August.

“I will not be contesting because my term is almost up. Constitutionally we are supposed to stand for two terms and not go for third term so I already served one term and this is my second,” said Chayera.

He however, said he is worried with the way the AGM has been organised.

“The way the AGM has been organised leaves a lot to be desired and as a national executive we are not involved. This is very unfair but all the same we cannot stop it,” he said.

On the issue of leadership crisis, Chayera admitted that there were problems in the association.

“Yes there are problems but it’s not to do with leadership as others have put it, to me I should say that this whole thing has turned political,” said Chayera, who successfully served the first term before being re-elected.

He said things were not okay for now as the Southern region will bring 40 members to the AGM with the Northern region 10 whilst Central and Easter regions will bring 15 and 17 members respectively.

“This AGM is going to favour the Southern region for sure. Anyway I have already said I am not contesting and I don’t know whether I will be present. I have achieved so much since I took over presidency including establishing the Women’s Desk,” he said.
