Dowa District football club, Bowe Stars, are reported to have detained Civil Youth Team squad for two days from March 24.

Sources said Bowe fans and officials detained Civil Youth in anger after their senior Super League team (Civil Sporting Club) failed to honour a friendly they agreed to play with the Dowa team on March 24.

Bowe had paid for Civil Sporting Club’s travel expenses, but the hosts were bitter to realise that, instead, the Lilongwe team dispatched their juniors to play the Dowa side.

There was commotion in Bowe as the match did not take place as the villagers felt duped and demanded a refund.

The angry villagers snatched keys for Civil Youth bus and detained it for two days.

Sources in Bowe claimed that the team was left destitute as they had no food and sought refugee at well-wishes house in Dowa.

Eventually, Civil Executive Committee intervened to sort out the issue.

On Tuesday, the club called for a disciplinary hearing involving the senior club’s technical panel members who were involved in the deal.

Management of Civil has since warned the accused technical panel members over indiscipline, following allegations that they pocketed money from Bowe.

Civil General Secretary, Ronald Chiwaula, on Wednesday refused to comment on the matter.

“It is an internal matter and not for public consumption,” Chiwaula said.

During pre-season, Super League clubs play strength-testing matches against non-league teams.

However, some non-leagues teams complain that Super League teams travel with weaker squads.

Some fans in Dedza also complained when they hosted Silver Strikers after the Bankers’ main team went to Chipata, Zambia, for two friendlies.

Most of the fans in the villages take advantage of the off-season break to watch Super League stars when they face non-league teams.
