Civo United players slammed

With Civo United on the brink of TNM Super League relegation, the team’s former players have questioned the commitment of the current squad.

Civo messed up the chance to move out of the relegation zone when they lost 1-0 at home to Blue Eagles, on Wednesday afternoon before losing by a similar margin to league leaders, Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday.

In reaction to the team’s dismal campaign this season, former Civo stars, Willy Chambwinja and Happy Nyirenda, have criticised the players’ character.

Chambwinja said the players’ body language was a major concern in most games this season.

“I think the majority of the players look like they are being forced to play for the team. Some of the players have lost confidence and do not deserve to play for such a big club. At this stage, players must die for the club,” he said.

Chambwin ja also slammed the team’s recruitment policy of signing rejected players from other teams instead of the youth.

Senior players, such as Nelson Kangunje, have been heavily criticised this season for failing to replicate last year’s form.

Civo have remained with crucial games, including hosting Kamuzu Barracks today and a trip to Blantyre to face Nyasa Big Bullets.

Another former Civo star, Nyirenda said the players must raise their game in the remaining fixtures.

“I feel sorry for the players and the whole team, but this is the time to show and prove that Civo are a big team,” he said.

In a bid to escape relegation, the club’s executive hiked players’ game bonuses from K25 ,000 to K45,000 for a win. After watching his side losing valuable points against Eagles, Coach Charles Manda admitted that Civo have slim chances of survival.

However, Kangunje dismissed the assertions that the players are not committed enough. Civo are second from bottom with 21 points from 26 games.

“We are just unfortunate this season but we are 100 percent committed to helping the team,” he said.

Last season, Civo won the defunct Standard Bank Cup after beating Be Forward Wanderers 1-0 at Civo Stadium through Kangunje’s goal.
