Civo United, Silver Strikers renew rivalry
Pride will be at stake Sunday when Capital City rivals, Silver Strikers and Civo United clash in a TNM Super League at Silver Stadium.
The Lilongwe derby is the most anticipated fixture in the Capital City but in recent years it lost its sparkle because of Silver’s dominance over their rivals.
Silver have remained unbeaten against Civo for the past three seasons in the league, the best Civo had achieved against Silver was a draw.
However, this is the game that brings Lilongwe to a standstill as friends turn into enemies for at least 90 minutes.
In this fixture, both teams need a win on Sunday for different reasons. The Central Bankers are hoping to continue from where they left last week after beating Wanderers 0-2 whilst Civo will be hoping to chalk their first win of the season.
Civo are bottom of the log table with three points from eight games. The servants have been lean upfront in production of goals this season after the departure of Jabulani Linje to Wanderers and Gerald Nkungula to Epac.
Antony Banda and Charles Nyirembo have all been shy in front of the goal.
But coach, Oscar Kaunda on Wednesday, said his team’s perceived frailties upfront won’t be a challenge against city rivals, Silver.
“The team is slowly getting back to its shape after a sluggish start to the season. I am happy now because the team is able to create and score goals and I think we will do well against Silver,” said Kaunda, whose side has received a big boost following the return of defence pillar John Lanjesi.
On the other hand, Silver are buoyed by their impressive victory against Wanderers.
In an interview, Silver coach Stain Chirwa said his charges would not be complacent when playing Civo on Sunday.
“It will be a tough game considering that Civo are our rivals and they are always tough when we are playing against them. We need to be on top of our game every time when playing because there are more things at stake than points,” said Chirwa on Wednesday.
Silver are third on the log table with 20 points from 11 games
