Civonets back to drawing board

Central Region netball giants, Civonets, have returned to the drawing board to strategise on how to bounce back following a two-year trophy-less campaign.

Civonets coach, Whyte Mulilima, said the coaching panel was discussing with the executive committee to plan for better preparations.

“This week, we are holding a series of meetings to address several issues that have been haunting us. We haven’t performed well lately so we are looking at the problems which affect us,” he said.

Civonets last won a trophy in 2017 when they lifted the disbanded GOtv Netball Champions League.

Last season they fell to position three from two in Mpico Trophy allowing Mafco to move up the ladder.

Mulilima said his absence from the team and lack of commitment from some players also contributed adversely to the side.

“We have also noted that when I am away with the national team it also affects the side. Another reason is that some players play basketball and at times they do miss netball games. In so doing our performance is compromised,” he said.

The Malawi national netball team assistant coach said possible solutions have been discussed as the side seeks to fight for trophies this season.

“As of now I can’t disclose our solutions because others might capitalise. The good thing is that we know our problems so it is easier to solve them,” he said.

Mulilima said the meeting would also determine which players to offload and recruit.

“We have a number of targets but we need consent from the executive before signing new players or dropping others,” he said.

Two seasons ago, Civonets promoted shooter, Cynthia Khunga, from their reserve side, Boma Sisters.

This season shooter, Eliza Nyaka, has also been earmarked for promotion.
