Four Civonets Netball Team players are in hot soup for travelling to Zimbabwe to play basketball without the consent of the club.
Coleta Mwalitino (captain), Ester Katungwe, Agita Chiwanga and Rose Nkanda missed Civonets’ game against Blue Eagles Sisters in the Gateway Mall Netball finals in Lilongwe last Saturday.
The players travelled to Zimbabwe with Brave Hearts Ladies’ Basketball Team.
Civonets new coach, Ruben Luhanga, said the absence of the players cost his team the final which they lost to eventual champions, Eagles.
“Definitely, I am disappointed with the conduct of some of the players. We had a tough cup final against our rivals and their absence shows lack of seriousness,” he said.
Luhanga refused to elaborate on the nature of the punishment, saying Civonets’ Executive Committee will decide.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the players will be given a one-year suspension.
One of the players, who confirmed travelling to Zimbabwe without the club’s consent, said the netballers were at liberty to choose.
“Some of us do not have contracts with Civonets and we are free to do whatever we want,” she said speaking on condition of anonymity.
Civonets finished as runners-up in the inaugural Gateway Mall Netball Tournament after losing 47-34 in the final to Eagles.
Mafco came third followed by Green Sisters Snr.
