Club Licensing deadline extended
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has extended the deadline for clubs to be given licenses in line with Confederation of African Football’s (Caf) Club Licensing System.
The deadline for issuing the licences was over the weekend, but according to Club Licencing manager, Casper Jangale, Fam Club Licensing Committee did not meet to scrutinise clubs’ applications.
“They did not meet because we have a new calendar for Club Licensing. There are new deadlines for the exercise,” he said, adding that new deadlines will be communicated later.
However, there is also a glimmer of hope for Dedza Young Soccer, Wizards FC and Airborne Rangers to implement Club Licensing after Fam extended an olive branch to the three teams, which are currently involved in Super League play-offs.
There is uncertainty on the play-offs after Dedza obtained a court injunction against the games, just one match into the play-offs.
Fam general secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, said the grace period would only be handed to the teams involved in the play-offs.
“We are just waiting for the court issue to be sorted out so that we should know the team that will get promoted. Because of the circumstances surrounding the play-offs and our commitment to have all teams licensed this season, the promoted team will be given, at least a month or two, to adhere to Club Licensing requirements. The other teams were given enough time,” he said.
Fam was supposed to start inspection of clubs’ facilities last week, but the exercise has not started.
Jangale said the process would start soon. The inspection was supposed to start with the Club Licensing committee members travelling to Karonga, Mzuzu, Dwangwa, Salima, Lilongwe, Zomba and Blantyre.
“It has been a wonderful experience, learning how clubs transact (financially), how clubs are structured (administratively), their legal stand (statutes), their youth development path (sporting) and what facilities they have and use (infrastructure). Club Licensing is here to stay, and here to improve the standard of the game if well-adopted,” he said
