Clubs adopt Sulom accounts

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has received a vote of confidence after teams adopted its financial report during a virtual meeting held on Saturday.

Initially, the clubs refused to discuss the financial report during Sulom’s annual general meeting (AGM) held on April 30 at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.

Both Sulom and representatives of some teams confirmed adopting the financial report.

Silver Strikers Board Chairperson George Kaudza Masina said the elements that forced clubs to reject the accounts had been sorted out.

“The rejection came because Sulom did not provide a 14-day notice to the clubs to study the accounts as per rules; as such, we could not proceed.

“Sulom has clarified all areas especially on the TV and broadcasting rights. That also includes debts that Sulom and clubs owe each other,” Masina said.

Another club representative, Ekwendeni Hammers Patron Gift Mkandawire said it was a fruitful meeting and urged clubs to do proper handovers.

“The problem sometimes is with some Super League clubs, who do not do proper handovers when officials leave office. This leaves a big gap in terms of information. As clubs we also demanded proper explanation from Sulom on some reported money which we, the clubs, owe Sulom,” Mkandawire said.

Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda said it was important to scrutinise the accounts.

“The accounts were deferred to 7th May 2022. This was because of the delay by clubs to confirm balances to the auditors. On 7th May 2022, a virtual meeting on agenda item above was convened and the accounts were deliberated on by the 16 clubs and were approved.

“The auditors opinion was that the accounts were in line with international accounting standards and a clean opinion was issued,” he said.

Sulom President Tiya Somba-Banda said they were happy that the accounts had finally been adopted.

“It is always nice when teams have confidence in their league administrators,” he said.

Sulom failed to hold an AGM at the start of the 2022 season due to lack of resources as a result of Covid restrictions.
