CMST suspends procurement head

Central Medical Stores Trust has suspended Director of Procurement Rex Kuyeli on allegations that he mismanaged 100,000 N95 facemasks.
CMST spokesperson Herbert Chandilanga confirmed the development yesterday.
“Meanwhile my superiors are still gathering information to allow them decide on the exact administrative route to be taken,” Chandilanga said in a written response to our questionnaire.
Chandilanga could, however, not indicate how much the mismanaged facemasks were worth.
Since Malawi registered the first case of coronavirus in April last year, CMST, using funds from the government, has been purchasing personal protective equipment for distribution to public healthcare service providers and other designated places to assist in the fight against coronavirus.
Kuyeli’s suspension comes at the height of investigations into the use of K6.2 billion Covid funds which the Treasury released to 13 Covid clusters last year.
The alleged misappropriation of Covid funds has angered Malawians, including President Lazarus Chakwera, who has indicated that he would not shield anyone involved in mismanagement.
