Coaches’ qualifications stir debate at EGM
The issue of Confederation of African Football (Caf) B licence as being the minimum qualification for TNM Super League head coaches, stirred debate at Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Extra Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) in Blantyre on Saturday.
It all started when National Coaches Association chairperson, Jomo Ngonga, wondered as to what would become of unqualified assistant coaches from the Super League teams in the event that their respective head coaches were absent from work for various reasons.
“What about if the coach falls ill, should we have someone who is unqualified taking charge of the team? Ngonga queried.
“There is also an issue with members of the technical benches where, sometimes, you have only the coach as a qualified person. You find that the rest are not qualified coaches or referees, yet they sit on the bench. It is these who incite violence because they do not understand the Laws of the Games.”
In reply, Fam president, Walter Nyamilandu, said it was illogical for an assistant coach not to possess a Caf B Licence when the very essence of them holding such post is to step in for the head coach.
Earlier, the coaches committee acting-general secretary, Benjamin Nyirenda, cautioned that plans to hold a Caf B Licence course mid this year might be ill-timed as only seven coaches would be eligible to attend.
He said it was a prerequisite that those who attained Caf C Licence practice for a minimum of two years before aiming for the B badge.
Nyirenda suggested that the next course be for B level as there are many coaches such as Ernest Mtawali, Young Chimodzi and Jack Chamangwana, who need to attend the A Licence as they have Uefa B Licences, which is equivalent to Caf B.
In reaction, Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary, Williams Banda, played the ball back to the coaches’ body, saying some of the issues being brought into the house could have been discussed by the coaches themselves and “be brought to the EGM as mere feedback.”
