Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) has changed the calendar of National Bank of Malawi (NBM) College Basketball Tournament from October to April.
Last year, the tournament was played from October to December, with 25 college teams taking part across the country.
Basmal General Secretary, Edgar Ng’ong’ola, said the change was meant to align the tournament with the basketball calendar, which starts in April.
“The other reason is that we want to run away from the rainy season. As you might be aware, we do not have indoor facilities where games can be hosted,” Ng’ong’ola said.
NBM Product Promotions Executive, Muti Chibwana, also confirmed the change of the calendar.
Tertiary Education Schools Sports Association of Malawi Basketball Coordinator, Fiwa Bunda, confirmed that they discussed the changes.
“To our side, the change has no impact as we always have challenges which we manage.
“For instance, we have different colleges that have their own academic calendars. It is obvious that by that time other schools will be closed, others will still be in class. But at the end of the day, games are played,” Bunda said.
NBM sponsors the competition to the tune of K30 million.
