Commonwealth Games’ president coming

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President, Louise Martin, is due to attend the 2018 CGF Africa Annual Regional meeting at Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe from February 8 to 10.

Delegates from 17 English-speaking African Commonwealth countries are expected to turn up for the meeting, with 42 having confirmed their attendance.

Malawi Commonwealth Games Association Administration Manager, Naomi Chinatu, said Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila, will open the meeting.

Chinatu said the meeting, which Rwanda hosted last year, will focus on how Commonwealth Games associations engage and discuss crucial issues pertaining to commonwealth sports movements.

“We will have heads of Commonwealth Games associations in Africa’s English-speaking Commonwealth countries and other officials. This will be an opportunity for delegates to share ideas on how to develop sports in their respective countries,” she said.

She said Martin would become the first CGF president to visit Malawi.

“We are privileged to be hosting such a high profile personality, who will also have time to interact with the government’s officials at various levels,” Chinatu said.

Some of the countries expected to send delegates to the meeting are Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Nigeria.

CGF Regional Development Manager, Ellen Barwise, will also be in attendance.
