Communities eliminate TBAs in Nkhotakota

Communities around Group Village Headman Mazengera in Traditional Authority Kafuzira in Nkhotakota can stand with pride after doing away with practices of pregnant women delivering at Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).

This was discovered on Tuesday when Maikhanda, a local non-governmental organisation promoting issues of safe motherhood, held an open day event at Chigumukire Primary School.

The open day was aimed at reaching out to communities on issues to do with maternal and neonatal health.

Representative of Traditional Authority Kafuzira said he was pleased that through by-laws that the chiefs established against pregnant women delivering at TBAs, the area is a shining example as no TBA is operating in the area.

“We are pleased that people in this area have now realised the importance of pregnant women to deliver at the hospitals and I hope that this will encourage other women to seek hospital services when they are pregnant,” said Kafuzira.

Speaking on behalf of District Commissioner, Malani Moyo said government was pleased that the working relationship between Nkhotakota District Health Office (DHO) and Maikhanda is bearing fruits.

Programs Officer for Maikhanda Martha Saidi said the organisation will make sure that the success story is sustained in the area.

“We want people to look beyond Maikhanda so that when our project is completed in this area, everybody should have in mind that delivery has to happen at the hospital. We will still work together with chiefs and the DHO so that the sustainability plan comes to pass,” said Saidi.

She said to deal with challenges women encounter by walking long distances to hospitals, her organisation has been empowering women to do small businesses and village banking so that they are able to support themselves when they are pregnant.

Maikhanda is on a four-year project which started in 2014 aimed at improving maternal and new born care.
