Complex Simba, Genetrix Ladies claim FMB championship

For the first time in four years, Sports Complex Simba women’s hockey side have been crowned FMB 11-Aside champions after ending Genetrix Ladies’ dominance.

However, it was a familiar story in the men’s category as Genetrix men’s team retained the championship for the fourth successive time.

The two sides were crowned champions at Hockey Stadium, formerly Upper Stadium, in Blantyre on Saturday.

In the ladies’ division, Simba finished with 15 points whereas Genetrix claimed second position on 14 points.

Scorpions finished third with 11 points while Nyala were on fourth position with eight points. Braves anchored the table with seven points.

Simba’s Coach, Caroline Mitochi, said after a four-year drought, they deserved the championship.

“We worked hard and we will continue doing so. Next year, we will come hard,” she said.

In the men’s division, Genetrix continued with their dominance when they finished on first place with 20 points. Nyala were second with 14 points whereas Scorpions finished third with 13 points.

Cobbe Sticks ended on fourth position with seven points.

There was no joy for Braves’ men who anchored the table just like their female counterparts.

FMB’s Marketing Manager, Widdey Nsona, assured Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) of continued sponsorship to the league.

“Hockey Association of Malawi is taking the sport in the right direction. We have seen the stadium project as well as the formation of the national team,” he said.

Ham’s General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, hailed FMB for its continued support.
