A group calling itself Concerned Sports Enthusiasts has asked Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Walter Nyamilandu not to contest in this year’s December 16 polls.
Addressing journalists in Lilongwe Monday, spokesperson for the group George Mussa said the current Fam boss has done his part and should pave the way for others.
“I am speaking in my personal capacity that Nyamilandu should leave the stage. A good dancer knows how to leave the stage. We want new leadership,” Mussa, who served as Central Region Football Association (CRFA) vice chairperson, said.
Mussa also asked Fam Member Associations (MA) not to nominate Nyamilandu, saying he has run out of ideas for Malawi football.
Among other things, the grouping has also asked for sanity ahead of the Fam polls.
Nyamilandu has served as Fam president for close to 20 years.
However, Nyamilandu has not come out in the open to say whether he would seek re-election ahead of the polls.
Again, current statutes allow him to contest for the post despite serving for close to 20 years.
When contacted Monday, Nyamilandu said: “Everyone is entitled to his opinion.”
However, Nyamilandu refused to disclose his stand when asked if he would seek re-election.
“The time is not right for me to state my position,” he said.
Reports suggest that Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President Fleetwood Haiya, who is also a Fam Executive Committee Member, is interested in contesting for the Fam top job.
However, Haiya has also not come out in the open on the matter.
The association is expected to elect office bearers on December 16 at a venue yet to be confirmed.
Sports analyst George Kaudza-Masina said Mussa is entitled to his opinion.
“But I think he is targeting the wrong person. Football has its constituency. If he wants his opinion to be heard, he should talk to affiliates,” Kaudza Masina said.
All the positions will be up for grabs during the polls in December.
