UK-based Malawian performer Flowerbud real name Denice Simon has teamed up with ethno-musician Waliko Makhala to hold a show tomorrow at St Paul’s Church Hall in Blantyre.
The show is aimed at raising funds which will go towards helping build a maternity clinic at Bwanje in Ntcheu.
Makhala said yesterday that they will have a series of fundraising concerts and that this was one of them.
“This is a concert for a good cause; we want to help our expectant mothers at this clinic,” said the musician, who prides in doing what he dubs ‘bush music.’
Flowerbud, who has stayed in the UK for years but makes visits to the country said when she came in 2010, she visited Bwanje Maternity Clinic and found out that expectant mothers were experiencing lots of problems.
“Expectant mothers come from very far areas to this maternity clinic but it does not have enough resources. There were more women when I visited the clinic and in the delivery room I found out that they didn’t even have a scale, I actually had to go and buy it using my money,” explained Flowerbud.
She said she was very touched with the situation and that since she did not have enough money, she only managed to buy a scale and a BP machine.
Still wanting to assist the maternity clinic, Flowerbud met Waliko and assisted by other people they thought of raising funds for the cause.
“We came up with the idea of shows in 2013 but then due to other challenges we could not manage. This show we are holding tomorrow, we were supposed to hold last year,” said Flowerbud, who is also into comedy.
She then called on people to patronise the show tomorrow which will see her performing sharing the stage with Waliko and dancers Floor Steppers.
“Ours is a commitment that the money realised during this show will go direct to the maternity clinic. We also call upon Non-Government Organisations and well wishers to come forward and assist. There are challenges in rural areas which need to be looked into,” said Flowerbud.
She said they are dedicated and committed to help and support needy communities through fundraising concerts.
“We are taking on the Bwanje Maternity Clinic in rural Ntcheu and the terminally ill children in rural Mulanje, who have neither internal nor external help of any kind,” said Flowerbud.
