By Bernard Mhone:
Northern Region Boxing Committee ushered in a new executive committee during controversial elections held at Mzuzu CCAP Primary School on Saturday.
Trouble was caused after candidates from rival camps started scrambling for voters prior to the elections.
Earlier on, delegates from Police, Karonga and Nkhata Bay had been stopped from taking part in the elections.
The decision was changed following the intervention of presiding officer Daud Shaib, who is also Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) General Secretary.
Tempers flared again when delegates opposed the body’s outgoing chairperson Wezzie Mayiza’s candidature to seek re-election.
Maziya consequently withdrew, allowing his challenger Happy Kumwenda to win the top seat unopposed.
“My plan was to seek re-election but I changed my mind to enable Kumwenda to get all the votes. I am ready to work with the new committee. It was a tough journey because most of you did not want my services. So, let my friend take it up,” Maziya said.
Meanwhile, Kumwenda has promised to revamp boxing in the region by instituting district committees to unearth talent.
“I have already identified a venue for boxing and very soon we will have a championship,” he said.
During the election, Adamson Chunda from Likoma was elected vice chairperson unopposed after his contender Mark Kaponda from Karonga did not show up.
Mike Zgambo was elected general secretary unopposed.
Idah Kanthenga was elected vice general secretary after collecting 21 votes against Bless Mvula’s nine votes while Joseph Kumimba was elected treasurer.
Returning officer Shaib said, despite misunderstandings, the elections were free and fair.
“We had a bad start but later peace prevailed because the former chairperson Mayiza showed sportsmanship. We hope the new committee will revamp the sport in the region,” Shaib said.
