Cops under soldiers’ threat

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

Malawi Police Service’s national headquarters at Area 30 in Lilongwe is certainly one of the safest places in the country as it houses the biggest concentration of police officers.

But that safety will be under test this afternoon as soldiers from Kamuzu Barracks (KB) will be all over as they search for three points.

The epicentre of the TNM Super League battle will be Nankhaka Stadium, where league leaders Blue Eagles will lie in wait for the soldiers.

Both teams registered surprise away victories last week with Eagles hammering Be Forward Wanderers 3-1 at Kamuzu Stadium to reclaim top spot whereas KB registered a 1-0 win over Silver Strikers at Silver Stadium.

KB go into the match with revenge on their minds as Eagles beat them 1-0 at the same venue and drew 0-0 at Civo Stadium.

A win for Eagles would see them extend the lead over second-placed Civil Sporting Club who are on bye because of the Airtel Top 8 Cup match against Mzuni at Civo on Sunday.

On the other hand, a win for KB would see them move up the table from position five. Eagles have 11 points from five games while Civil have nine points from three assignments.

Eagles assistant Coach, Wilson Chidati, said they are taking every game seriously in their quest to maintain the lead.

“We know that KB are a big threat but they will find us at our home. We know the type of football they play and we have a special strategy to silence them,” Chidati said.

Eagles will miss the services of Captain Micium Mhone who is with the Flames as they face eSwatini in an African Nations Championship qualifier at Kamuzu Stadium this afternoon.

But the policemen still have other reliable players such as Gregory Nachipo, Schumacher Kuwali and Gilbert Chirwa are available.

The soldiers started the season on a low having drawn two consecutive games before rediscovering their winning formula against the Central Bankers.

Assistant Coach Temwa Msuku believes the win over Silver last week was their turning point.

“We are going to Nankhaka with one mission of winning the match. Of course Eagles are enjoying good form but we are not scared. We have good players who are capable of beating any team,” he said.

The soldiers are likely to have Manase Chiyesa, Marshal Maluwa, Ndaona Daisi and Sammy Chiponda on the battlefront as they aim at destabilising the enemy lines.

In other games scheduled for this afternoon, Rookies Ntopwa are in Karonga to face Savenda Chitipa United whereas Mlatho Mponela will host marauding Tigers at Civo.

Both Ntopwa and Chitipa are still searching for their first win of the season.

Ntopwa are second from bottom with a single point from four games whereas Chitipa are one step ahead with two points from three games.

In tomorrow’s action, struggling TN Stars host Tigers at Kasungu Stadium whereas Karonga United will be in action against Ntopwa at Karonga Stadium.
