Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in Blantyre on September 2.

During the AGM, there will also be elections of board members of the copyright body as the current board’s two –year term has come to an end.

The board which is headed by Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango on Friday met musicians in Lilongwe to brief them on the works they have carried out now that they are winding up.

“It was a fruitful meeting, we held the same meeting in Blantyre and Lilongwe but then we decided to hold another one in Lilongwe. The current board’s two-year term has come to an end so we wanted to inform them on some of the things we have done,” said Mhango.

He said the meeting was not organised as part of the current board to garner support ahead of the elections.

“Some members might think this was a meeting to call for support but we just want to take time out to brief members of what we have done so far so that when new members are elected, they know where we stopped and where we are going,” said Mhango.

He admitted that the biggest challenge which has been there has been lack of communication among members which he said needs to improve.

Some of the musicians who were invited during the meeting have been deemed ‘rebels’ a s they have been holding their separate meetings to critically look at the challenges facing the creative industry.

“We are always open to criticism and so this is why we decided to invite some of these members. I should also commend them for coming out and voicing out their concerns and all this is part of developing our industry,” he said.

Recently some members expressed concern over Mhango’s holding of a position of board member and at the same time Mum president saying this was compromising his work in terms of speaking for the musicians.

But Mhango argued that he is not the first person to hold two positions as the late Gertrude Kamkwatira also held two positions then as National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) president and Cosoma board chairperson.

He said as the outgoing board, they are open to re-election or new members can be elected.

Musician Kendall Kamwendo of the ‘Nyemba Nyemba,’ fame and Rudo Mkukupha Chakwera confirmed through a concerned musicians’ forum of the meeting on Friday.

Chakwera said there were several pertinent issues that were raised during the meeting apart from briefing them on what the board has done so far.

The singer said apart from discussing several issues, they bemoaned lack of information for the several disagreements which have been transpiring.

Meanwhile, Kamwendo has since started calling upon fellow artists to pay their membership so as to stand a chance of voting for the new board members.

Apart from Mhango, the other outgoing board members include Mafumu Matikiti, Andrew Faria and Apostle Enesia Chitheka Lewis, who is currently in South Africa for medical treatment.

Other musicians, who were also part of the meeting, include Lawi, Vita Chirwa, Mafilika, Marvellous Deeds, Bishop Manguluti and Lawrence Mbenjere.
