Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) Tuesday held a pre Annual General Regional Meeting at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre to engage artists in the Southern Region and discuss royalties.
The issue of royalties has been key among musicians with many questioning on how royalties are distributed.
It was the same story Tuesday when musicians questioned the copyright body on how it distributes royalties and the criterion it uses.
The regional gathering in the Southern Region follows meetings in the Central and Northern chapters held on September 8 and September 15 2020 respectively.
The meeting in Blantyre saw presentations being made on among others, membership documentation, collection of royalties, update on blank levy, monitoring system and Arts Sacco.
The presentations were made by among others Cosoma Licensing Manager Mutty Mukhondia.
Mukhondia said the gathering was important to enlighten musicians on some of the developments which have been made.
“There is a lot which has happened on the ground and so, it was important to meet musicians and share them some of the information,” he said.
During the gathering some artists were also decorated with certificates of recognition for attaining over K1 million in royalties from the blank media levy stream.
Some of the musicians who were recognised with certificates include Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Anjiru Fumulani, Favoured Martha, Shammah Vocals and Anthony Makondetsa.
In absentia, the other artists who were decorated with certificates are Patience Namadingo and Piksy.
The recognition follows distribution of over K306 million in blank media levy.
The copyright body recently distributed over K206 million from the blank media levy for the period June 2019 to July 2020.
