Cosoma finally has board

After operating without a board for some time, Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) now has a board which was approved last month.
The copyright body did not have a board as the names which were sent to the government by Cosoma were yet to be approved.
Cosoma Senior Licensing Officer, Rosario Kamanga, said last month that there was an anomaly between those that made it to the board and those that were nominated by the general assembly to be considered for appointment to the board.
According to a letter which The Daily Times has seen, the board will be headed by veteran actor and Kwathu Drama Group Director Eric Mabedi.
The letter indicates that the government made the appointment effective November 10 2019.
Apart from Mabedi as a chairperson, the list has names such as Charles Sinetre, who was not selected during Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) General Assembly and Kendall Kamwendo. The list also includes the late Joseph Tembo.
The others are ex-officio members, Secretary for Youth, Sports and Culture, Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Controller of Statutory Corporation.
Cosoma Executive Director, Dora Makwinja, confirmed of the board yesterday but could not shed more light.
“Yes, we have a board but we have the name of the late Joseph Tembo as well, so we will have to go back to the government to ask for a replacement,” Makwinja said.
Some of the names of the members, who were elected to be put in the board during the General Assembly and have missed out on the approved board are former Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) President Bishop Reverend Chimwemwe Mhango and Rudo Mkukupha Chakwera.
