Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) giants, Cougars, emerged champions of King & Queen of the Court Basketball Tournament after beating Bravehearts 70-55 in an entertaining final match at Civo Court in Lilongwe on Sunday.
The contest was balanced in the opening three quarters but Cougars upped the tempo in the last quarter to be crowned champions.
Crazy Warriors came third after beating last year’s winners Magang’a in a third-place play-off.
Cougars went home with K2 million plus a trophy whereas Bravehearts received K1 million. The most valuable player was Peter Mdulamizu of Cougars whereas Asante Chauma won the most assists accolade.
In the ladies’ category, Bravehearts Ladies defeated Lady Dynamites 65-42 to be crowned champions and got K1.5 million plus a trophy whereas Dynamites got K750,000.
In a post-match reaction, Cougars Captain, Nyadani Chaika, said: “They gave us good run for our money but we showed endurance throughout the game. We are building a strong team and we want to maintain our standards.”
Bravehearts Captain, Madalitso Kadiwa, admitted that they were second best on the day.
“We tried our best but they wanted it more than us,” Kadiwa said about the competition, which G. Y Imports and Exports and Reserve Bank of Malawi sponsored to the tune of K6 million and K2.8 million, respectively.
