Cougars retain Cezobal championship
Cougars on Sunday retained the Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) title after beating Mimbulu in the final finds played over three-days at Civo Basketball Court Lilongwe.
The finals were played in the best-of-three series and Cougars emerged winners with a 2-1 victory. Cougars won 64-51 in the last game.
For winning the championship, Cougars received a trophy, gold medals and K400,000 from G. Y Imports and Exports.
In the ladies category, Lady Angels won the women’s title following a 2-1 victory over Capital Clippers in the best-of-three-series. Angels received K200,000 for winning the championship.
Lady Dynamites came third whereas ABC Lady Lions finished fourth.
Mada Montana of Mimbulu and Rose Nkanda of Angels were named Most Valuable Players in the men and ladies category respectively. Each received K50,000.
Cougars captain Takondwa Mengezi was pleased with the performance of the team.
“We had self-belief that we could win the championship. We were trailing in the first quarter but we came hard in the second quarter to win the contest,” Mengezi said.
His Mimbulu counterpart, Edgar Ng’ong’ola was disappointed with the loss.
Speaking during the prize presentation, G. Y Imports and Exports, managing director, Griffin Kalua promised to continue sponsoring the league.
Kalua said the firm was ready to sponsor all the basketball leagues in the country.
The championship was sponsored by G. Y Imports and Exports – dealers in stationery, ICT equipment, furniture and building materials to the tune of K1.2 million.
