Councillor Lewis Ngalande accused of assault

Democratic Progressive Party Ward Councillor Lewis Ngalande is being accused of assaulting Olive Msungama, wife to businessman Kondi Msungama.

Msugama said Ngalande assaulted her because her husband who is in England owes Ngalande money.

Msungama said she was doing some shopping in Limbe when all of a sudden a man slapped her at the back. She said she fought back thinking it was a thief only to see Ngalande joining the fight demanding his money.

“It was my husband who owes him the money and the issue is already being handled by the police. Before my husband left for England, he told me he was giving Ngalande some K1 million but I do not even know how much he owes him and the business they did,” she said.

Msungama also claimed that during the incident with Ngalande, she lost K501,000 and phones as Ngalande and his colleagues tried to wrestle her handbag and car keys.

She said after the incident, Ngalande rushed to report the matter to Limbe Police where they held discussions with the Officer-in-Charge Brenant Chitanda who told her to pay the money first and launch the assault complaint later.

But Ngalande denied any wrongdoing in the matter.

He said Kondi Msungama pledged to help him clear his two vehicles a Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Noah with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

He said Msungama charged him K2.5 million for the Fortuner and K1.2 million for the Toyota Noah which Msungama’s wife herself collected on behalf of her husband.

“He did not help me clear the vehicles as we agreed until I started demanding the money back but to no avail. We have engaged the police on several occasions with him pledging to repay the money in the presence of the police as witnesses,” he said.

Ngalande again denied having assaulted Msungama’s wife or ever seeing the alleged K501,000 from her bag.

“It is just a ploy to get sympathy from the public and to tarnish my image. I did not assault her and I did not even touch her bag. How could I get the bag then get K501, 000 and give back the remaining K52, 000?” he queried.

Chitanda confirmed receiving an assault complaint, saying police investigations show that the Msungamas indeed owe Ngalande the said money.
