Court clarifies on early adjournment

One of the judges hearing the presidential elections result case, Healey Potani, has said there was no anomaly that prompted the Constitutional Court sitting in Lilongwe to adjourn early Tuesday.

At the start of the proceedings Wednesday, Potani said there was speculation as to what caused the early adjournment but the adjournment was normal.

On Tuesday, the court adjourned at 5 o’clock in the evening as opposed to the set time of 6 O’clock in the evening.

But Potani said the court’s proceedings may be adjourned at any time deemed appropriate.

He said adjournments are at the instance of the court or at the instance of the parties involved.

“A lot of speculations have come about as to what might have occasioned the adjournment. It was a necessary adjournment and those of you who interact with the court very often would know proceedings may adjourn at any time as necessary.

“These are at the instance of the court or at the instance of the parties, so there was nothing unusual about Tuesday’s adjournment and no usual occurrence occurred to cause that adjournment,” Potani said.
