Court shifts Misozi Chanthunya’s sentencing to Friday

The High Court in Zomba has set Friday as a fresh date to deliver its ruling on Misozi Chanthunya’s murder case.
Last Friday, the court convicted Chanthunya on three counts of murder, hindering burial of a dead body and perjury.
The court said the circumstantial evidence which was brought to it proved that Chanthunya killed his girlfriend, Linda Gasa.
It also said Chanthunya hindered burial of Gasa’s body by burying it under the floor of a bathroom at his Mwala Cottage in Monkey Bay.
The Court also added that Chanthunya lied in his statement at Soche Police in Blantyre, that he left Gasa at Wenela Bus Depot and that the deceased had left for her home in Zimbabwe.
In an interview, State lead lawyer, Steven Kayuni, said the sentence has been scheduled for 9 am tomorrow.
Chanthunya’s lawyer Michael Goba Chipeta also confirmed of shifting of the sentence to Friday.
He said they were given Wednesday as a day to submit their mitigations. Chipeta added that the same day was scheduled for sentence.
“But surprisingly, when we contacted the registrar of the High Court, we were told that sentence has been shifted to Friday,” Chipeta said in a telephone interview.
