Uncertainty surrounds the 2020 edition of the First Capital Bank National Youth Football Association Under-20 league after the sponsor reportedly cancelled this year’s sponsorship due to the impact of coronavirus pandemic.
National Youth Football Association (NYFA) general secretary, Thokozani Chimbali, confirmed having been notified about the withdrawal. However, bank officials refused to comment.
Chimbali said the bank has indicated that Covid-19 pandemic was among key factors leading to the bank’s withdrawal of sponsorship.
“Indeed we have received communication from First Capital Bank that the bank won’t be able to give us sponsorship to run the 2020 competition. They also listed several factors including the Covid 19 pandemic,” Chimbali who is also Silver Strikers chief executive officer said.
However, Chimbali said the association would contact Football Association of Malawi (Fam) for advice to plan the way forward.
Following the development, Chimbali said the developmental league was not sure when the season will start should the ban on sporting activities due to Covid-19 be lifted.
Nevertheless, Chimbali was hopeful that First Capital Bank would bounce back once the pandemic was over.
“As an association we will discuss on the next move. FCB has always been a reliable partner to Malawi youth football. FCB has been increasing the sponsorship and we are proud of them,” Chimbali said.
Mzuzu-based Sanwecka were crowned 2019 champions after beating Blantyre-based Ndirande Stars 3-1 in the final on November 30 last year.
Sanwecka joined Moyale Youth and Fish Eagles as the only champions from the Northern Region in the 12 year old competition.
