Covid audit reports ready, under review

The National Audit Office (Nao) has finalised the audit into the utilisation of K17.5 billion and K6.2 billion meant for Covid response.
Nao spokesperson Rabson Kagwam’minga said Tuesday that the private firm that was subcontracted to carry out the audit had submitted its preliminary report to the office.
“The audit firm conducted the audit on behalf of the Auditor General (AG). Therefore, the AG must have time to scrutinise the report to ascertain whether the assignment has been conducted with strict adherence to the minimum required standards as stipulated in the Terms of Reference,” Kagwamminga said.
The Treasury released K17.5 billion in January 2021 and another K6.2 billion tranche later in the same year, when the government announced that its Covid response programme needed to be intensified.
President Lazarus Chakwera assured Malawians that all Covid funds would be audited and accounted for.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Defenders Coalition Chairperson Gift Trapence has said they are looking forward to learning about findings in the audit.
Members of Parliament, through the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, were also pushing the AG’s office to facilitate the auditing of Covid funds.
