GARNERING SUPPORT FOR NOMADS—Some of the scenes during Saturday’s elections

Divisions have emerged in Be Forward Wanderers’ Supporters Committee for the Northern Region as some members withdrew from contesting for top positions during elections conducted at Mzuzu Stadium over the weekend.

Hiwett Mkandawire, who wanted to contest on the position of chairperson, pulled out from the race at the 11 hour, claiming that the old and main supporters committees invited people who are not Wanderers supporters.

Mkandawire withdrew from the race, accusing the two committees of ferrying Nyasa Big Bullets supporters to vote for Vasco Msowoya who was contesting for the post of chairperson.

“We were ready to participate in the polls but got disappointed that the delegates were not from our camp. The old and main committees wanted the same people who were in the old committee to continue holding positions.

“Therefore, my group will hold elections involving genuine Wanderers supporters on Sunday. This will result in the region being represented by two committees. Zigwagwa and the main market have passionate Wanderers supporters and they deserve to be represented,” Mkandawire said.

But Wanderers main Supporters Committee General Secretary, Samuel Mponda, said his committee will recognise the committee which was elected on Saturday.

“In cases where candidates are not prepared and have realised that their contender has more supporters, they withdraw. That is exactly what has happened. The elections were free and fair as far as I am concerned. As a main committee, we are moving forward with this committee,” Mponda said.

Msowoya was elected Chairperson while Winston Mwalwanda is his vice. Chilipo Kapanda was voted General Secretary with Alex Msowoya scooping the post of Treasurer General.

The committee has five committee members.
