Creatives make positive step

KACHEPA — There are a lot of young people who are
interested to do music

In a bid to capacitate creatives with skills that would boost their career, Ntha Foundation in collaboration with Music4Malawi and Kwathu Centre has organised a capacity-building workshop for artists, talent managers and producers.

Dubbed Kwathu Upgrade, the project will train creatives that include event managers and DJs through workshops and interactive sessions.


Funded by Music in Africa Foundation, Kwathu Upgrade is a multi-platform project that aims at building the capacity of young creatives in Malawi through interactive workshops, content development and distribution as well as music showcase.

Project Communications Officer Alex Kachepa said the workshops are scheduled to take place from November 22 to 26.

He said interested artists will be required to submit applications.


Kachepa said after gaining mentorship from top industry professionals, the participants will attend and perform at a special industry showcase on December 4 and get start-up capital of 250 Euros to invest in their creative arts.

Some of the topics to be covered during the workshops are marketing, artist management, audience development, alternative revenue stream for artists and intellectual property and copyrighting.

“There are a lot of young people who are interested music or music-related careers but they are not knowledgeable on how to be successful in the field. So we need to help them with skills and resources for them to make progress, “Kachepa said.

He further said it was time that creatives knew the laws that protect them in as far as issues of copyright are concerned and also how the artists could make money out of their talents.

Some of the facilitators of are Thanda, Q Malewezi, Prince Chikweba, Dennis Imaan and Talumba Chirwa.

Q described the platform as a crucial development for the arts industry in that they would ,among other things, share ideas.

Kwathu Innovation and Creative Centre is an innovation and creativity hub established to support youth, creatives and social entrepreneurs in the country
